For our second week we had a chance to share – images, thoughts, experience, ambitions. We were all invited to bring some of our own images, as prints or on electronic devices, to share and discuss in small groups. And we did – old hands and first-timers.
The aim was partly to get our eye in for the characteristics of different images, and partly to give us all a chance to get to know each other a wee bit better. We planned an experienced member or two in each group to help promote discussion, but we didn’t really need it. Conversation flowed, and we had to get out sharpish when we realised the building manager had a home to go to.
This Wednesday, 12 Oct, we’ll have a chance to share – images, thoughts, experience, ambitions. Plan to bring some of your own images, as prints or on electronic devices, to share and discuss in small groups. The aim is partly to get our eye in for the characteristics of different images, and partly to give us all a chance to get to know each other a wee bit better. We’ll have an experienced member or two in each group to help promote discussion. Prints can be shared anonymously, we’re not looking to put anyone on the spot.
New faces are still welcome to attend two weeks on a trial basis, to see if you’d like to join us for the season. For those who are ready to join, the online Membership Form for the season is open. The membership subscription of £55 can be paid by BACS or by cheque – details are in the membership form.
The first night of the season is traditionally titled President’s Night. It’s a chance for our president, Graham, to welcome us back, or welcome us for the first time if we’re new.
In the first half of the evening, there was an opportunity to let other members of the club’s committee introduce themselves, and to outline the programme for the year, before some informal chat over a hot drink.
After the break, we were treated to the vastly-improved quality of the projector in the Soutar Theatre, while Graham showed us a bit of what he’s been working on. This included an audacious combination of portraits of local personalities, Caterham 7 sports cars up Glenshee, and photographing Motherwell womens football team.
There’s now less than a week to go before we’ll be back together again!
It’s been two years, but we’ll be meeting in person, in the warm, in the library, with real speakers, and real prints – still careful, just all a bit more real. There is also the option of an informal friendly something together in the New County Hotel afterwards, for those that want.
The Membership Form for the new season is open, in good time for our first night on Wednesday 05 Oct. The membership subscription of £55 can be paid by BACS or by cheque – details are in the membership form. Of course, new faces are welcome to attend two weeks on a trial basis – to see if you’d like to join us for the season.
We’ve got a varied mixture of speakers and workshops for the first few weeks, as shown on our Programme page. As a heads-up, it’s only 4 weeks until the hand-in on 26 Oct for the Main Cup – this one’s for digital images. And 7 weeks until the hand-in on 16 Nov for the PKM Trophy – that’s for mono prints. Now’s a good time to check your printer!
We look forward to seeing familiar – and new – faces in the Library at 7:30pm on Wednesday 05 October.
This year we are delighted to showcase the passion of five different photographers, each to inspire us in our own way.
One of the delights of photography is exploring different ways to see our world. Each of us finds inspiration and passion in our own way, and this year, each of our external speakers will welcome us into their world – how they’ve been inspired, and how they choose to express their passion.
If you’re a prospective new member, you’re welcome to attend two weeks on a trial basis, in case you need time to make your mind up. Any two weeks – it’s up to you.
Our Speaker evenings are 19 and 26 October, 2 November, 25 January, and 1 March. There’s more information about each speaker on our Programme page.
After another busy summer of trips and photo walks around Perth, we are making the final preparations for the new PPS season.
Returning to the AK Bell Library will bring a chance to enjoy in-person presentations by our guest speakers, take part in member workshops, and catch up with one another over a cup of tea. Of course, we return with the buzz of internal and external competitions, in both print and digital formats, providing a great way for us all to learn and practise new skills.
You’ll find all the information on our Programme page, with week-by-week details available. For Competitions, you’ll find guidance on each, giving you all you need to know to take part. And through our regular emails and meetings, we’ll remind you when a hand-in is coming up, to help you think about how you’d like to take part.
If we are new to you, our members are all at different points in the photography journey. This is a fun and safe space to be inspired, learn more, practice and play, and ask questions. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Welcome to the start of the 2021–22 season. With continued uncertainty around room capacities, we’ll use Zoom for our meetings. We start off on Wed 06 Oct, 19:30, with our President’s Night, and a chance to hear from some of the Committee. During October we’ll enjoy a presentation by Graham Dargie on the 20th and member’s talk/workshops on the 13th and 27th.
Time to renew your membership
With the start of the new season, it is time to complete the online application form again, which can be found on the Membership page of the PPS website. If you prefer to see if PPS is for you, we are delighted to welcome you to join us for a couple of trial weeks while you get to see how we enjoy our Wednesday evenings through the cooler months.
It will be great to see everyone again, to start our next season.
Final preparations are being made as the team puts the finishing touches to the new exhibition, Playing with Light, which officially opens on Friday morning.
The cafe is open, happy to serve you a delicious coffee and baked treat.
With covid restrictions, we will start with an informal launch from 10:30am, for anyone who is able to join us as we celebrate the beautiful perspectives we each see around us.
Birnam Arts, Station Rd Oct 1-24 — Wed to Sunday, 10am-4pm Masks required indoors
Throughout the past decade or so, PPS members have come together every couple of years to bring an exhibition of members’ work at Birnam Arts. We are delighted to announce that after a delay last year, our next exhibition opens to the public on Friday 1 October and will run through until Sunday 24 October.
Playing with Light brings together more than 50 pieces from 19 photographers, and we are delighted to invite you to stroll the gallery space to join us. In addition to the framed pieces, members have created a short digital display showcasing more than 70 favourite photos for your your enjoyment.
Many of the framed photographs are for sale, with a range of unframed and smaller items available for you to choose from. There are some photographs that are not for sale – thank you for understanding that not all photographers wish to sell the artwork they are exhibiting.
Our online catalogue will go live on the 1st — it highlights each photographer and shows you their works in the exhibition.
We are delighted to be partnering with Birnam Arts again. Birnam Arts is open Wednesday to Sunday between 10am and 4pm. The gallery can be found on the mezzanine level, accessible by the staircase or an elevator. And the café and shop are also open to help make your outing to Birnam an enjoyable experience. Please note that masks are required inside the building.
We hope that you will consider visiting the exhibition more than once between 1–24 October – between Wednesday and Sunday each week – and enjoy our different perspectives of Playing with Light.
